Prepare for Your Visit

How to Prepare for Your Hearing Appointment

A little preparation can help you get more value from your visit. Before your hearing appointment, gather a few key items and think about the listening situations that feel most difficult for you.
  • Your questions

This is your time to ask your Hearing Care Professional anything you'd like to know. Put together a list of your questions and bring them along.
  • Bring someone special

Having someone by your side to help support you can make all the difference. They will be able to pitch in and discuss all the information you get at your appointment.
  • I.D. insurance information

Make sure to bring identification and your insurance card. This way, we can confirm your identity and your insurance coverage.
  • Explore hearing solutions

It could be helpful for you to explore our hearing solutions before your appointment as an inspiration on what hearing aid models and types may best suit you and your lifestyle.
  • Medical history and medication

Both medical history and information on any medication you're currently taking can help narrow down possible hearing loss causes.
  • Online hearing screening results

If you have taken our online hearing screening, bring the results with you.
  • List your hearing challenges

It would help if you prepare a list of examples of your hearing challenges, like struggling to hear in noisy environments or on the golf course. You could also ask your family or friends whether they have examples of situations where they experience your hearing challenges.
  • Completing forms

We will ask you to complete forms either online beforehand or when you arrive. If you need assistance with this, we are happy to help you.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

What Happens at an Audiology Appointment?

Your appointment will last approximately one hour. During that time, our knowledgeable Hearing Care Professional will guide you through 5 simple steps:
  • 1.

    Evaluation of hearing health history

First, we’ll review your medical history including any medications you currently take, and discuss if you have any ear-related symptoms or hearing concerns.
  • 2.

    Physical exam

Then, we’ll conduct a physical exam of your ears including looking in your ears with an otoscope.
  • 3.

    Validate results

These non-invasive tests will show the level at which you hear tones and speech, providing valuable information about your hearing.
  • 4.

    Offering solutions

Your Hearing Care Professional will discuss the test results with you and provide a solution.
  • 5.

    Try on and start new

Try on a pair of hearing aids and experience the sound of better hearing.
We encourage you to bring a family member or friend with you too. An "extra set of ears" can be helpful for remembering information shared during the appointment.

Check Your Hearing Online

Online Hearing Screening

If you haven’t taken our online hearing test yet, you can do that before your appointment and bring your results with you. They can help start the conversation with your Hearing Care Professional.

Just keep in mind that the online test is only a preliminary screening, so you should still visit a HearUSA center for a full in-person hearing screening.

Analyzing Your Hearing Screening

Hearing Screening Results

Your Hearing Care Professional will graph your hearing on an audiogram to determine your type and degree of hearing loss.

They will then go over the findings with you by explaining what sounds you may or may not be able to hear which often correlates to the hearing challenges you shared prior to the appointment.

From there, if a hearing loss is found, your Hearing Care Professional may recommend hearing aids. You may even take a pair home with you that day for a trial.

What if I Need Hearing Aids?

Next Steps If You Need Hearing Aids

If your results show hearing loss, your hearing care professional may recommend hearing aids based on your hearing profile, lifestyle, preferences, and budget. During this conversation, they may discuss which hearing aid styles could suit you best, what features may support your daily life, and what options are available for comfort, fit, and discretion.

They may also review insurance and financing information, as well as whether you may be able to try hearing aids. The right recommendation is personal. Some people prefer the most discreet option possible, while others prioritize rechargeable batteries, easier speech understanding in noise, or simple controls.
